Learning, skills and opportunity

Education & Human Capital

Education investments are strongest when access, learning quality and progression are addressed together. THESO's approach connects the conditions for participation with teaching support, relevant skills and institutional capacity, so that an education activity has a clear place in a learner's longer journey.

Children, young people and adults face different barriers to learning. Programme design starts by examining who can participate, who is excluded and what prevents attendance or progression. This includes the availability of teachers, learning materials, safe facilities and appropriate support for learners with disabilities, alongside household costs, displacement and the responsibilities that can interrupt education.

We structure education partnerships around defined learning objectives and realistic delivery arrangements. The scope may include formal education support, alternative learning pathways, foundational skills or preparation for work, according to the context and agreement. Local education institutions and communities help shape delivery, while responsibilities for teaching, supervision, learner protection and monitoring remain explicit.

The work in practice

Build the conditions for lasting progress.

Access and sustained participation

Identify barriers through enrolment, attendance and community information, then select proportionate responses. Consider accessibility, safe routes, sanitation, suitable learning times and the needs of learners returning after an interruption. Participation support should be linked to clear safeguarding arrangements and routes for raising concerns.

Teaching and learning quality

Support teachers and facilitators with practical materials, observation, mentoring and peer learning connected to the agreed curriculum. Use appropriate assessment to understand learning needs and adapt instruction. Keep administrative demands manageable so that reporting supports teaching and timely decisions about learner support.

Skills and pathways to work

Design skills activities around local demand, entry requirements and credible progression opportunities. Combine technical learning with literacy, numeracy, problem-solving and workplace readiness where needed. Define how learners can apply their skills through employment, enterprise, further study or supervised practice, without promising jobs that have not been secured.

Institutions and learning environments

Connect facility improvements and equipment with operating plans, trained users and maintenance responsibilities. Strengthen school or programme management, transparent resource use and constructive community participation. Include arrangements for continuity during disruption and the handover of records, materials and responsibilities when a funded activity closes.

Evidence & learning

Ask better questions.
Understand the change.

These questions guide programme design and review. They are areas to measure, not claims of achieved results.

  1. Who enrols, attends and completes learning, and which groups continue to face barriers to participation?
  2. What changes are evident in assessed learning, practical competence and progression against the agreed objectives?
  3. How do teachers use supervision, materials and learner feedback to improve the quality of instruction?
  4. Are institutions able to maintain learning environments and continue essential support after external funding ends?

Partner in this focus area

Bring the right expertise together.

Partnerships can bring together education authorities, schools, local organisations, training providers and employers around a shared learning pathway. We seek a clear connection between the needs identified, the quality of instruction, the support available to learners and the opportunities that follow. Funding and reporting arrangements should reinforce that connection throughout delivery.
